ROLAND C. HARTMAN Roland C. Hartman, a poultry writer and editor for more than 70 years, died October 29, 2013 in Redlands, California, where he lived since 1948. Born in Milwaukee, WI on June 15, 1906, he was 107 years of age at his passing. He sold his first article to Poultry Tribune in 1925 just before enrolling at The University of Wisconsin-Madison, to major in agricultural journalism and poultry husbandry. While editing Everybodys Poultry Magazine at Hanover, Pennsylvania, in 1939, he founded Poultry Digest, selling it eight years later to go to California to edit Pacific Poultryman in which he reported on the many innovations there in egg production. Retiring from Watt Publishing Company at the end of 1969, he returned to Poultry Digest as editor for 10 years, retiring again in 1979 to continue as a contributor into 1997. In 1932, Hartman was senior author of "Hatchery Management," revised in 1946. He authored and published "Keeping Chickens in Cages," in 1950. In 1995, he was inducted into the Poultry Hall of Fame at the National Agricultural Library by the American Poultry Historical Society. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, William and Mary K. Hartman; 2 granddaughters, 5 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Private Services will be held at a later date. Cortner Chapel, Redlands is in charge of arrangements.
