Mary Matsuye Kotaka Obituary
MARY MATSUYE KOTAKA, age 97, passed away from heart failure on January 1, 2014 at Villa Health Care Center in Riverside, CA. She was born on December 16, 1916 in Los Angeles, CA and had lived in Riverside, CA for 18 years, previously in North Hollywood, CA for 35 years. She worked as an order clerk for 14 years for Purofied Down Products in North Hollywood and 7 years as a seamstress for Levi Strauss Company in Los Angeles, CA. She graduated from Banning High School in Long Beach. She was a member of Zenshuji Buddhist Church in Los Angeles, CA 90012. Mary was the last Nisei family member whose life was greatly changed by World War II. She and her family were forced to evacuate from California and moved to Jerome, Arkansas in an effort to keep the Ohta family together. She met and married her husband Sam Masao Kotaka in Cleveland, Ohio in 1946. She is survived by her daughter Deborah Kotaka and son-in-law James Ferrari of Riverside, CA. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Sam Kotaka in 1983; father Takuichi Ohta of Los Angeles, CA; mother Tona Ohta in Pacoima, CA; sisters Mildred Nakamura, Alyce Kawaki, Rose Nakamura and Marie Yokagawa; and brother George Ohta. Funeral Service will be on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 2pm at Acheson and Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary, 7944 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92504. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
