Roy Schoppa Obituary
ROY SCHOPPA Roy has gone home to be with his Savior Lord Jesus. He was born in rural Lockett, Texas on January 9, 1934, the youngest child of Karl and Emily (Fischer) Schoppa. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Wilbert and Verna Lee and sisters Bernice Noack and Dorothy Thorman. He decided to enter the Ministry following the tragic death of his brother in a plane crash. He attended Concordia Seminary where he met Norma Gaydosh, daughter of Henry and Marie Gaydosh, on the steps of Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield, IL. Love followed quickly, but they had to wait until they gained permission to marry. But if people know Roy, he wouldn't wait long, especially if he set his mind to it, and they secretly eloped in November of 1956. A formal church ceremony took place the following June 1, 1957. Roy left Concordia Seminary in 1959 with a degree, a wife as his partner in life and ministry, a new baby son and a call to ministry in Twenty Nine Palms, CA. Here he served as first pastor and started a new church in Yucca Valley where he was invited to help celebrate the 50th anniversary just last year. With the family expanded by two daughters, the next call landed them in Bethany, Long Beach, CA. Following several years there, they moved to Immanuel, Redondo Beach, CA where the family grew to completion with another daughter and son. While there he also earned his PhD in Church Administration. He served at Immanuel for 27 years, loving every minute. From the beach back to the desert he came to Faith Lutheran, Riverside, CA where, after his retirement, he stayed until his entry into heaven. During his retirement he also served several churches as a guest pastor and was slated to preach on the day he went to his eternal home. Next to his service to his Lord and his flock, family was Roy's greatest passion. Roy is survived by the love of his life, Norma, his wife of 56 years, and their five children: son Chris and wife Cathy Keast, daughter Lauri and husband Richard Huntington, daughter Karen and husband Russ Robinson, daughter Andrea and son Joel. Roy has eight grandchildren: Summer (Robinson) and husband Richard Pagett, Casey and Holli, Logan, Dakota and Austin Robinson, Keslyn Huntington, and Nathan and Matthew Schoppa; and five great grandchildren: Hailie, Dyllon, and Deegan Pagett, and Austin and Taven Robinson. We will be celebrating his life and ministry, on Sunday February 24th at Faith Lutheran Church located at 4785 Jackson Street, Riverside CA 92503 at 3:00pm. A viewing will be held at Arlington Mortuary located at 9645 Magnolia Avenue on Saturday February 23rd from 2:00 pm through 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Faith Lutheran Church to support their ministry.
