Frederick Robert Hammon JR(1941 - 2012)

Longtime Peninsula resident and recent Texas resident Frederick R. Hammon Jr, 71, passed away suddenly Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at Good Shepard Hospital with his wife and daughter by his side.

Per his wishes, a wake was held at Longview Eagles Lodge, Longview, Texas, Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013. A wake will be held at Soldotna Elks Lodge, where Fred was a lifetime member, at a future date. His cremated remains will be scattered in Cook Inlet where he enjoyed his favorite hobby of halibut fishing. Being on the water was where he was the happiest.

Fred was born in Easton, Md., to Frederick R. Hammon Sr. and Ruth Denny Hammon on Nov. 27, 1941. His Marine service was from 1963 to 1965 with his last duty assignment in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The motto "Once a Marine, always a Marine" was a perfect way to describe him, right down to his Marine bulldog tattoo.

His service station ownerships began in Phoenix, Ariz., in the mid 70s and in 1976 he purchased Soldotna Y Chevron, providing full service to all who came into his station. After 30 years he retired to Lake Cherokee, Texas.

Fred was preceeded in death by his father, Frederick R. Hammon Sr, mother, Ruth Ellison, brother George Hammon, and his previous wife, Beverly Hammon.

He leaves his best friend and wife of 19 ½ years, Gloria Hammon; daughter Cathy Miller and husband Richard of Richmond, Ind., grandson Bradley, granddaughter Brianna; daughter Wendy Johnson and husband Tim of Redmond, Wash., grandsons Nick, Silas, and Thadd; daughter Heidi Moder and husband Mark of Bellingham, Wash., grandsons Cameron and Drew; daughter Melinda Carlyle and husband Richard of Diana, Texas, grandson Destin, granddaughters Chelsee and Christiana; brothers Cliff and Sonny; sisters Ruthie, Libby, and Mary; numerous nieces and nephews and many, many good friends in Texas and Alaska.

All will miss him very much.
