Luella P. (Philipp) Barker(1917-2011)

Sterling resident Luella P. Barker, 94, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011 at her children's home in Sterling.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18 at the Soldotna Bible Chapel, 300 W. Marydale Ave. in Soldotna. Pastor Tim Weekley will be officiating.
Mrs. Barker was born July 6, 1917 to Edna and Ed Philipp in Mountain Air, N.M. She moved to Sterling in the fall of 1977. Luella worked at the Soldotna Drug Store, was an officer in the Hospital Auxiliary and was one of the original starters of the Sterling Senior Center. She loved volunteering for the Special Olympics. In 1989 she received the Sterling Homemaker of the year, The First Lady's Volunteer Award in 1996 and The Soroptomist Women of Distinction in 2000. Luella loved family, crafts, sewing, handwork, her many friends, and music.
Her family wrote, "Luella lived her life loving God and her family and sharing love with her friends. Luella had a wonderful gift of encouragement for everyone she met; we especially thank the doctors for the extra care they gave Grandma including the CPH nurses, aides and cafeteria ladies."
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Barker of 50 years; great-grandson, Scott Barker; brothers, Earl and Walter Philipp; sister, Idis Faye Spurlock; and parents.
She is survived by her son, Ronald Barker and wife, Mary of Sterling; granddaughters, Ronda Edwards and husband, Doug of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Tricia Notter and husband Ted of Sterling; grandson, Mike Barker and wife, Patti of Sterling; great-granddaughters, Katie Raye Misner and husband, Mike of Sterling and Ariel Seegraves and husband, Ben of Warrensburg, Mo.; great-grandson, Wyatt Raymond Merritt of Las Vegas, and great-great-grandson, Michael Vaughn Seegraves of Warrensburg.
