Mr. William Spencer Reeder Sr.(1923 - 2013)

Longtime Soldotna resident William Spencer Reeder Sr., 90, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at his home in Soldotna.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013 at The Soldotna Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Soldotna Senior Center.
Mr. Reeder was born April 30, 1923 in Los Angeles. He graduated from Coachella Valley Union High School in Thermal, Calif. He furthered his education by attending Cal Tech University. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in WWII in the Pacific as an Aviation Radioman 3rd Class. In 1965 he moved to Alaska where he first lived in Anchorage before making Soldotna his final home. William worked for Marathon Oil Company as an Associate Engineer until he retired in 1986. He was also The Laurawood Arms Senior housing manager for 20 years. William served as the Soldotna City Mayor; he was on the Soldotna City Council, the board of directors for Central Peninsula Hospital, was the board president for the Soldotna Senior Center and was also a board member for the Mountain Rose Housing Association. William was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., a master Mason, and in 1994 he received the Person of the Year award from the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce.
His family wrote, "We will always remember him as a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather whose life was focused on family, friends, and the town he loved so much - Soldotna. He was a long time Alaska resident, and a civic-minded citizen- always active and interested in preserving and protecting the character of the Soldotna community. We are proud that he helped design the Veterans Memorial at the Soldotna Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest. He will be missed by all who were blessed to have known him."
He was preceded in death by his son, Private First Class Spencer Jay Reeder.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rosie Reeder of Soldotna; sons, Colonel (Retired) William Reeder Jr. and wife, Colonel (Retired) Melanie of Washington; Gregory Reeder, Wes Reeder and his wife Terri, and Don Reeder and his wife Diane all of California; son, Daniel Reeder and his wife Valerie of Oregon; daughter, Sarah Reeder also of Oregon; son, Ryan Kapp and his wife, Lauri; daughter, Rhonda McCormick and her husband, Michael all of Soldotna and 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
