Longtime Kenai resident Catherine (Atkin) Bush joined the Lord her Savior and husband Peter Bush Sr. in heaven on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017 after a long battle with illness. Cathy was at her log cabin in the woods surrounded by her three children – right where she wanted to be when she passed.

Her family is planning a celebration of life to be held in April/May 2018 where Cathy's local, Alaskan family and friends can gather to have a barbecue and a few games of croquet and badminton that she loved to watch in her yard during the summer months. Another celebration will be held in New York at a date yet to be determined. Condolences may be mailed to the Bush Family at 225 Richfield Drive, Kenai, AK 99611.

Cathy was born April 14, 1942 in Goshen, New York, the last of three siblings. Cathy was part of the large Atkin and Maloney family trees in Goshen and Chester, New York. She met her future husband, Pete, when she was 16 years old. After marriage in 1960, they followed a lifelong goal and drove the Alcan Highway to Alaska in 1976. Their young family spent summers fishing and camping while they worked and lived in Anchorage. Cathy taught her children how to smoke and can fish and instilled the values of hard work and family sacrifice. The couple dreamed of owning their own land and a log cabin on the Kenai Peninsula. They began to realize that dream and the entire family spent a few painstaking years cutting trees, peeling lumber and constructing their cabin in Valhalla Heights Subdivision.

Cathy made many friends in Kenai and Nikiski when she began an administrative career for the Unocal plant on the North Road in 1980. She was regarded as a highly capable and valued part of the administration for Unocal and continued that work until she retired with 20 years of service in order to take on full-time care of her ailing husband who fought cancer for 10-plus years.
Catherine Bush was preceded in death by her parents, Ann and Lloyd Atkin; siblings Joan Moore and Donald Atkin; and husband Peter Bush Sr.

Her three children survive her: Peter (Skip) Bush Jr. and wife Kristen Bush of Eagle River, Michele Bush of Kenai, and James Bush of Nikiski; in addition, grandchildren Dane and Chelsea Smulick of Anchorage and Logan Bush of Eagle River; along with great-grandchildren Danica, Dallin, and Everett; and also many other living relatives in the Goshen and Chester, New York area.
Cathy treasured the memories she had with Pete and all the beautiful moments she spent with her three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and her loyal canine companions, Kenai, Cricky, and Taz. We will miss her spitfire personality and sharp wit. A snapshot of her typical day would be a dog warming each foot, a hot cup of tea nearby and the newspaper spread out while she solved the daily Sudoku puzzle.

Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
