Longtime Alaskan and Kenai resident Eugene Leon "Gene" Herrick, 87, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017 at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna.

Private family services will be held.

Gene was born Feb. 19, 1930 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He moved to Alaska in August 1968 and lived in Anchorage and later moved to the Kenai Peninsula, residing in Kenai.

Gene enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, being with his family and watching old westerns.

His family wrote, "Gene loved the 'adventure' of living in Alaska and never thought of ever leaving it. He was a loving and devoted father who thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his kids and his grandchildren. He will be missed by all."

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Charise Ashfield.

Gene is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Max Best of Soldotna, Chris and Jim Tapley of New Braunfels, Texas, and Kim Herrick of Anchorage; son, Eugene L. Herrick Jr. of Kenai; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
