Gregory J. (Greg) Niesen passed away on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017 at his home in Nikiski. He was 60 years of age. A devoted husband and father, Greg will be deeply mourned by his wife of 36 years, Lenora Hardin Niesen, and his sons, Gabriel J. Niesen and Isaac W. Niesen.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, at Nikiski church of Christ, officiated by Cy Cox. The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Valley Church of Christ, in Wasilla, officiated by Robert Kuenning. A graveside service will follow at Aurora Cemetery in Wasilla.

Greg wore a suit to work daily but spent his happiest times in blue jeans. It was his desire that those attending his memorial service and funeral wear their favorite comfortable clothes rather than formal dress. If possible, his wife suggests that Iditarod Air Force friends wear IAF logo items.

Greg is survived by one brother, Randy Niesen (Patricia) of Terrebonne, OR, and son Lawrence; two sisters, Laurie Ebenezer of Kona, HI, and children Chad and Charity; and Lana Anderson (Alan) of Anchorage, and children Andrew and Emily; Aunt Virginia Bowen of Wasilla; Aunt Dorothy Ponchez of Spokane, WA; Uncle Bill Punches (Carol) of Las Vegas, NV; Aunt Evvie Garis (Larry) of Anchorage; Uncle Glenn Niesen and Aunts Florence Wilde and Darlene Leach, all of Michigan. He will also be greatly missed by his cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Greg was predeceased by his parents, John R. and Eloise E. (Punches) Niesen.

Greg was born in Seward, Territory of Alaska, on March 16, 1957 and moved with his family to Anchorage after the 1964 earthquake. A graduate of Service High School, Greg entered a career as a Customer Engineer with International Business Machines. In 1981, he married Lenora Hardin Niesen and the couple established Frontier Business Systems in Anchorage. Partners in every sense, Greg and Len were co-named the SBA Small Business Persons of the Year in 2005 in recognition of their achievement in developing Frontier Business Systems to a corporation with four branches employing nearly fifty Alaskans. Subsequent to their retirement in 2009, Greg built a home in Nikiski, where the Niesens have resided since 2013.

Greg's love for his wife and sons was second only to his love for God. He was baptized into Christ in 1982 and was an active member of the South Anchorage church of Christ from 1982–1994, the Valley church of Christ from 1994–2013, and the Nikiski Church of Christ for the past four years.

An avid and skilled outdoorsman, Greg enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, skiing, snow-machining, motorcycling, scuba diving, and most other sports available to Alaskans. He especially loved flying small planes and participated as a pilot in the Iditarod Air Force from 2006-2010 and as Assistant Chief Pilot in 2016.

Memorial donations may be made to the Valley Church of Christ Building Fund, PO Box 876401, Wasilla, AK 99687.
