Lifelong Alaskan and Ninilchik resident Marian Jean Hostetter, 86, passed away, Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013 at Heritage Place in Soldotna.
At her request, a private graveside service was held on Saturday, Nov. 2, in Ninilchik. Pastor Paul Kupferschmid officiated.
Marian Jean Steik was born on Aug. 11, 1927, in Ninilchik to Chris and Julia Steik. Marian was the fourth of seventeen children. She attended school and church in Ninilchik and Bible school in California. She worked in the Seldovia cannery where she met her husband Richard "Dick" Hostetter. They were married on August 11, 1948, and homesteaded in Ninilchik.
She loved to garden and pick berries for jam, jellies and pies. Family and friends were spoiled with homemade bread, sticky buns, cookies and pies, especially her grandchildren. As an Alaskan woman she loved homemaking, time with her children, friends and relaxing around a campfire on the beach while the family was fishing. The aftermath of fishing was cleaning, canning, smoking fish and making memories.
Her family wrote, "As a 'homestead' woman, she faced many challenges which she met with her strong faith and her love for the Word of God. She longed for heaven and fulfillment of her faith. She left this earthly home for her heavenly home on October 29, 2013. She finished her race well and will be missed by her family and friends."
Marian was preceded in death by her husband Richard, daughter, Rhonda, parents, Chris and Julia Steik, brothers, Harry, Stanley, Leo, Carl and Eugene, and sisters, Gladys, Margaret, Pauline and Christine.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Rhoda and husband Dale Dolifka, Roberta and husband Steve Johnson, Richard Hostetter, and Ruth and husband Ron Sterling; grandchildren and their spouses, Aaron and Madison, Jeffrey, Kara, Meagan and Chad, Gretchen, Tim and Sarah, Dan and Emily, Sarah and Hector, Rebecca and Jathan, Krystal and Brian, Kandi and Jonathan, Koral and Chad, Tammy and Brian, Jesse and Janine, Nathan and Jen, Whitney, and Zachary; former daughters-in-law, Koreena Ortiz and Maureen Collins; great-grandchildren; brothers, Alvin, John, Mike and wife Joan, and Gene; sisters and brother-in-law, Doris Kelly, Shirley and Glenn Warner
