Norma Mapes died peacefully on Nov. 2, 2013 with her daughter and companion holding her hand, at her home in Sutherlin, Ore.
Per her request, no services will be held.
She was born in Minneapolis, Minn. on June 6, 1939, to Marcelle and Louis Rychlik.
The family moved to Sequim Washington there she attended school and grew up to later meet her husband of 34 years Jake L. Mapes. They were married on Oct. 22, 1954 and moved to Kenai, AK in 1967. While in Kenai she was a homemaker and worked office jobs. Her last official job was the Teamster's Local 959 as an office manager and dispatcher, for 15 years. Norma retired in 1989 and left Kenai in 1990 to move on to Mesa Ariz. While in Mesa she met Bernie Lawrence and they traveled all over the United States towing a fifth wheel and seeing the sites. They finally settled down in Sutherlin, Ore. six
years ago and remained there until her death.
Norma loved to travel and make candy. Bernie remained her constant companion for the last 23 years until her death.
Norma was preceded in death by her husband Jake Mapes; Mother, Marcell; sister, Carol Warner; brothers Auron and Oscar.
She is survived by her companion Bernie Lawrence, daughter, Vickie Tyler (Victor); son, Steven Mapes (Tamera); brother-in-law Norman Mapes; grandsons, Mike Metteer (Suzie), Trevor Metteer (Tiana), Jake Mapes (Vicki), Christopher Mapes; sisters Gloria Rasore and Kathy Hann, brother Louis Rychlik; all of Port Angeles, WA. Many nieces and nephews, and 3 great grandchildren.
"Mom, God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you and whispered, 'Come to me'. With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. And although we loved you dearly, we could not force you to stay. A tender heart stopped beating; hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the best. Love you MOM," the family said.
