Kenai resident Richard Morlan Brauer, 81, passed away Monday, Oct. 23, 2017 at his son's home in Kenai.

A private celebration of his life will take place.

Richard was born June 23, 1936 in Boise, Idaho. He served in the U.S. Army for 22 years and retired from the U.S. Army Security Agency in 1975. He also worked for 20 years at Boeing in Everett, Washington, retiring in 2000.

Richard enjoyed writing short stories and novels.

His family wrote, "He enjoyed 'verbal sparring.' He loved to argue almost any topic, but especially enjoyed religious and political debates.

"He had a talent for writing and had published a collection of 70 short stories and three novels to date. He also had many short stories and novels 'in the works.' He was a very generous person. For years, he gave to charities every payday near to his heart. In more recent years he really enjoyed 'random acts of kindness.' As an example, he would anonymously pay for someone else's meal when he was out at a restaurant."

Richard was preceded in death by his son, Larry Brauer and his mother, Grace Knight.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son and daughter-in-law, Kurt and Lorene Brauer, all of Kenai; grandsons, Joe Shosky and his wife, Tara, of Mt. Vernon, Washington, and Beau Brauer and his wife, Kit, of Clinton, Washington; granddaughters, Jackie Birchfield and her husband, Jeremy, and Samantha Chiarizio and her husband, Brandon; and great-grandchildren, Serenity, Dayton and Jaden, all of Langley, Washington.
