Sandra Yvonne Umlauf, 73, passed peacefully from this life and on to the next, surrounded by her family, on Friday, Jan. 12, 2018 in Anchorage.

Details on a memorial will be announced at a later date.

Sandra was born Feb. 9, 1944, in Santa Monica, California. Her family later moved to Thousand Oaks, California, where she grew up. She attended Mount St. Mary's College and earned a B.A. in business administration. After college, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona and worked at Luke Air Force base.

In 1970, she traveled to Anchorage to visit a friend. There she met her lifelong partner, Paul Michael Umlauf, on a blind date. They married in 1971 and settled in Anchorage. Sandy worked as the chief clerk at the Alaska bankruptcy court and they later had two children, Andrew Umlauf and Christine Umlauf. An opportunity to live on a quiet lake near Soldotna presented itself in 1979, where she and Paul built the house they lived in for the next 38 years. During construction, Sandy received a call from the adoption agency with whom they had applied months previously, and Mollie Umlauf became her daughter. Sandy and Paul went on with various business ventures, including commercial fishing in Cook Inlet and Bristol Bay.

Sandy was involved in many aspects of her local church, Christ Lutheran, as well as the Alaska synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. She was an avid gardener, and many people enjoyed her bright summer flowers that will never be forgotten. Travelling by ATV around Alaska was one of her favorite recent experiences, where she took many amazing wildlife photographs.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Christine Umlauf; brother, James Kallen; and parents, Bud and Theresa Kallen.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Umlauf, of Soldotna; son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Ashley Umlauf; daughter, Mollie Umlauf; and grandchildren, Thor, Anna and Evelyn Umlauf, all of Langley, Washington.
