Charles Jones Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of husband and father Charles Jones Jr. He passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in his sleep Friday, May 8.

Charles was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where he went to Mumford High School and participated in the school orchestra as well as the All-City Band as a trumpet player.

Charles spent a large part of his adult life in service to his country. He enlisted in the Air Force after graduating from high school and served five years in several overseas locations.

After his honorable discharge, Charles joined the State Department and spent the next 30 adventurous years in the diplomatic corps, working in countries such as Egypt, Zaire, Germany, Israel, Papua New Guinea (twice), Vietnam, France, Iran, Canada, Antigua, Senegal, Grenada and Ireland.

He loved and enjoyed every country he served in, explored them when he could and made many friends in the local community.

Though some assignments were more challenging than others — such as Iran, where he and 51 fellow Americans were held hostage for 444 days by radical "students" — he always said he would not change any of his experiences.

Once his time in the Foreign Service was done, he retired to Vancouver, British Columbia. In Vancouver, he became involved in the movie industry, appearing in many TV shows, movies and commercials either as a background performer or in a principal role.

He also served on the executive board of the UBCP (Union of British Columbia Performers).

Following September 11, 2001, Charles wanted to return to the U.S. After a year in Ferndale, Washington, we settled in Sequim.

Charles loved living in SunLand, where neighbors were friendly and embracing. He enjoyed walking with his constant companion, Chew Chew, and they spent many happy hours at the dog park playing and chatting with all their doggy pals.

Charles lived his life to the fullest and still had big plans for more adventures. He will be missed for his deep, melodious voice; infectious laugh; and the many profound and involved conversations he would have with anyone daring to take on the subject of the day.

Charles was predeceased by his mother, Nannie Lou; father Charles Sr.; and daughter Katherine.

He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years and best friend, Maria; daughters Carla, Candice and Kari; and grandsons Paul, Ivan Jr., Isaiah and Malick.

May he rest in peace, and we will meet again in time.

We will celebrate his life on July 1 (his 75th birthday) at our residence.
