Virgil Stanley Read

August 10, 1917 - September 6, 2012

Virgil Stanley Read, 95, passed away at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles on September 6, 2012, due to complications of cancer.

He was born to Charles and Emma (Bronsak) Read in Ruso, North Dakota, on August 10, 1917.

He came to the North Olympic Peninsula in 1941. He married Helen Marie Willson in 1943, May Knight in 1991 and had a companion, Dorothy Myers, as of recent.

Virgil was a veteran of the United States Navy and was stationed on the USS Arizona from 1935-1939 (coxswain) and was in the U.S. Coast Guard on Ediz Hook from 1941-1945 (boatswain's mate 2nd class).

Virgil was a journeyman electrician in Port Angeles and worked for Olympic Electric. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (church vestry), a Meals on Wheels and Port Angeles Food Bank volunteer, Lifeline installer, caregiver, member of trailer groups from Port Townsend Elks and Port Angeles Eagles, and an ardent fisherman in Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Canada.

Virgil is survived by daughters Judy (Argil) Jeffery of Idaho, Joan (Paul) Johnson of Alaska and Sharon (Mel) Cork of Port Angeles; grandchildren Doug York and Gwen Rudzinski, Greg, Aaron and Susie Jeffery, and Heather Johnson; and great-grandchildren Jacob York, Lora and Jane Rudzinski.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ronald and Donald; sister Lois Whited; his wife, Marie Read; and later his wife, May Read.

There will be a memorial service and reception at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 15, 2012, at 4 p.m.
