Gloria (Jenkins) Hays (May 16, 1950 - May 25, 2013)

On Saturday, May 25, 2013, Gloria (Jenkins) Hays died peacefully at home on Marrowstone Island. The cause was a rare cancer of the appendix. It was first discovered in August 2008.

She was born May 16, 1950, in Paris, Illinois. Her parents' residence was in nearby Saint Bernice, Indiana. Gloria graduated from Clinton High in Clinton, Indiana, in 1968 and attended Indiana State University and Purdue University.

A summer job with Indiana Bell lead to a 30-year career with the Bell System and subsequent companies. She met her future husband, Kelly Hays, at Indiana Bell and was married on January 26, 1969. In 1977, they moved west to Montana, Oregon and finally to Seattle in January 1979.

They immediately purchased their Marrowstone property but lived in the Seattle area and commuted to Marrowstone on weekends until retirement in 2000. Gloria and her husband both retired from US West/Qwest and moved permanently to their pink house on Marrowstone.

Gloria's interests included travel, genealogy, math puzzles and caring for her home. At work, Gloria was known for mentoring other employees and helping them gain the skills to advance. From 2003 through 2008, as a member of Water for Marrowstone, Gloria used her organizational and data analysis skills to ensure approval of the public water system on Marrowstone.

Locally, Gloria is survived by her husband, M. Kelly Hays, and their dog, Maxwell. Survivors include her mother, Geraldine Jenkins of Saint Bernice; six younger brothers and sisters, John (Margie) Jenkins of Terre Haute, Indiana, Douglas (Nancy) Jenkins of Shelburn, Indiana, Cheryl (Terry) Smith of Saint Bernice, Arnie (Joanie) Jenkins of Clinton, Indiana, Charlotte (Greg) Albers of Springboro, Ohio, and Lori (Troy) Urbain of Saint Bernice; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death in 1981 by her father, Arnold Jenkins. She was also preceded by Richard and Beverly Bendicksen, both fellow Bell System employees who owned adjoining Marrowstone property. They were family in spirit.

There are no services. Her body was cremated on June 5 and will be buried in Sound View Cemetery on Marrowstone at a future date. Her gravesite is adjoining the Bendicksens'.

On January 26, Gloria celebrated 44 years of marriage, and on May 16, she celebrated 63 years of life. Her favorite song was "What a Wonderful World," and she always found a way to believe it.
