Heather died in Port Angeles, Washington, on August 29, 2018, after a brief and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Heather was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, on June 7, 1944, the eldest daughter of Wallace Carson Alward and Audrey Norma MacLeod Alward.

Heather emigrated with her family in 1958 to Lakewood, Ohio. She graduated from Lakewood High School in 1962. She received her RN diploma from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in June 1965, and that same month married her high school sweetheart, George (Terry) Irwin.

For the next six years Heather worked as an RN to support her husband's academic studies. Still working, Heather entered pre-medical studies at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, graduating in 1976 Summa cum Laude with Departmental Honors in Chemistry. Heather attended University of Kansas School of Medicine where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. She continued her training at KU in Internal Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

She was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Heather was in private practice in Berkeley, California for many years. Later she worked for Group Health Co-operative in Olympia, Washington.

In the last chapter of her career Heather was proud of her employment by the Jamestown S'Klallam Clinic in Sequim, Washington and happy in her service to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles.

Throughout her career Heather enjoyed and returned the love and respect of her patients, of her fellow physicians, and every member of the medical team. Her closest friends were often nurses and non-physician office staff. Egalitarian to the core, Heather was ever quick to defend the cause of team members she saw as oppressed – more than once earning the opprobrium of Management.

Heather was an adventurous and energetic spirit. She enjoyed sailing with her husband, including a sailing excursion from Alameda, CA, to Zihuatanejo, Mexico. After retiring she and her husband, along with their faithful dog, Gato, traveled extensively with their small trailer around the US and Mexico. Her bright smile and sparkling personality will be sorely missed.

Heather is survived by: her husband, George Irwin III, PhD; her son, George Irwin IV, J.D. and his wife, Sarah; grandchildren Nathan Irwin, Tessa Irwin, Saoirse Stock, and Daisy Stock; son-in-law

Steve Stock; her sister Susan Alward O'Dell and husband, Lloyd O'Dell; her brother Wallace L. MacLeod Alward, M.D., and his wife, Kazi; her sister-in-law Kelly Alward; and her sister Sarah Alward Redding, M.D, MPH and husband Mark Redding, M.D. Heather was preceded in death by her daughter, Christin Stock, and by her brother, Peter Alward, M.D.
