Irene Moyer died peacefully on March 25, 2012, at Sherwood Assisted Living in Sequim.
She was born Fay Irene Butts on March 25, 1913, to Inez M. and Sydney J. Butts in Seattle, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Moyer (1982); a grandson (1983); and her sister Margarete Dunlap (2011), and is survived by her sister Hazel Nelson; her daughter, Judith (Aaron) Hirschel; son George E. (Martha) Moyer Jr.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Irene grew up in Seattle and graduated from Roosevelt High School. She was active in Camp Fire Girls. After graduation, she worked at the Edmond Meany Hotel coffee shop and then at the Seattle office of the U.S. Army.
She married George E. Moyer in September 1936 in Seattle. The Army told her she could no longer work there as her husband was employed, and there were men who needed her job.
In addition to being a housewife, she helped manage apartment buildings and stores in Seattle and a cattle ranch near Stratford, Washington.
She was a generous person who enjoyed helping others. Her charitable activities included several hospital guilds. She and her husband of 46 years retired to a beach property near Quilcene in the mid-'70s. They both trained and served as volunteer firemen.
The family suggests contributions be made to her favorite charity, Seattle Children's Hospital, 4800 Sand Point Way Northeast, Seattle, WA 98105.
