Donald Black was born March 3, 1956, to Roland and Dorothy Black in Forks.

He went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2011, at the family home, surrounded by family and friends.

He attended schools in Hoquiam, Concho Indian School and graduated from Chemawa Indian School in 1973. He completed a two-year refrigeration training certificate from Clover Park Technical School, Tacoma, Washington.

He was employed by New England Fish Company, High Tide Seafood, a fisherman and worked at the Quileute Tribal School.

He enjoyed and loved all children. He was a coach for the girls fast-pitch team "Moody's," which he called his moody girls.

Donald was elected as the first local elder of the 1910 LaPush Indian Shaker Church on March 5, 2011.

Rookie married his wife, Shelly, on March 30, 1985, and they renewed their vows for their 25th wedding anniversary. He devoted his life to his family, church and community.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roland Black Sr.; stepfather Robert Ward Sr.; sisters Roberta, Ann and Winifred; his brother, Rex Ward; and his son, Corey Jackson.

Donald is survived by his mother, Dorothy Ward; brothers Leroy Black, Roland Black Jr., Harold Black, Robert Ward Jr., Jeff Ward, John Ward, Mike Ward, Frank Ward and Steven Smith; sisters Cathy Black, Rosalie Black, Dorothea Ward, Nancy Ward, Karen Ward, Linda Reid, Rita Williams, Angel Francis, Eileen Ward and Laura Ward; children Charlotte Jackson, Robert Taylor, Robert Coberly III, John Dunbar, Angel Williams, Carla Coberly, Trina Black, Suzanna Black, Donald Penn and Faron SoHappy; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, due in November.

A candlelight service will be Monday, July 18, 2011, at 7 p.m. at the Shaker Church in LaPush. A funeral will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the A-ka-lat Center.
