Douglas Montgomery Bailey, 91, passed away Friday morning, September 6, 2013, after a short illness.
Doug was born in Port Angeles on March 4, 1922, to Roland David and Margaret Ann Bailey. Doug's parents owned a small neighborhood grocery store, and this is where Doug and his brother, Don, who preceded him in death, spent much of their young lives.
At age 17, Doug lied about his age to enlist in the National Guard in 1939, and in 1940 was called up to the Army and proudly served his country in World War II.
As a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 101st Airborne Division, he served in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany. Doug received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
After the war, Doug went on to work for the General Petroleum Company, Montgomery Ward and Crown Zellerbach, and when his father died, he took over the management of Bailey's Grocery Store.
He then purchased a share in Peninsula Plywood, staying there until PenPly was sold to ITT Rayonier.
Doug then worked for Estes Realty and the Clallam County Sheriff's Office.
Doug married Shirley Ingraham in 1945 and later divorced.
On October 20, 1961, Doug married Dorothy Carlin, combining their families to become the "Bailey Bunch."
Doug and Dorothy traveled extensively throughout the United States, attending Airborne reunions. When
they traveled to Europe in June 1984 for the 40th anniversary of the Liberation of Rome Tour, Doug received the French Legion of Honor from the French government for participating in the Battle of the Bulge for the liberation of France.
Doug was a scuba diver in his younger years and helped organize the Nemgorf Club ("Frogmen" spelled backward) and was active in skin diving competitions at Ediz Hook.
Doug was also a bagpiper and was a member of the North Olympic Highlanders and later joined the Keith Highlanders in Seattle. He also played his bugle for community functions in Port Angeles.
Doug was an avid reader of books and his newspapers.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Dorothy; son David (Kathie) Bailey of Port Angeles; daughters Constance Carlin Esclovon of Oakland, California, Sherry Carlin (Dave) Denny of Auburn, Washington, Sandy Bailey (Jim) Anderson, of Amelia Island, Florida, Cathy Carlin (Pat) Lamoureux of Port Angeles and Patrice Bailey of Bellingham, Washington; as well as nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Rest in peace, Dad. You are loved.
