John — "Mike" to family and friends — passed away at home from cancer on January 17, 2014.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Katie, and his parents, Eldon and Irene Cooter, all of Port Angeles.
Born in Port Angeles to Irene and Eldon Cooter, he lived his entire life in Port Angeles, with the exception of the four years he spent in the U.S. Air Force from 1965 to 1969. After his honorable discharge, he came home and went to work at the Peninsula Plywood mill, for which he worked 47 years.
He had a deep love of the mountains and knew these Olympics well, and he tried to impart his love of them to his sons. He enjoyed them every year.
His new loves were his grandsons. In addition, he had just started work for Habitat for Humanity, which he really enjoyed.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna Cooter of Port Angeles; sons Lawrence (Melisa) Cooter and Robert Ames; and two grandsons (and one on the way), Shawn and Derek Cooter, all of Port Angeles. He also leaves behind his sister, Debbie Baker; nieces Kerry (Jason) Camby, Tracy Baker, Sally Baker and Heidi; nephews John Kirkpatrick, Daniel Kirkpatrick, Zeb Wilson and Kenneth; two great-nephews; and three great-nieces. He also leaves behind members of his extended family, uncle Roy Curtis; aunts Dottie West, Linda (Sam) Cawyer, Yvonne Curtis, Babs Machenheimer and Cleo Hargrave; and numerous cousins.
A celebration of his life and potluck luncheon will be held at the Veterans Center, 216 South Francis Street, Port Angeles, on Friday, January 31, 2014, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, 540 East Eighth Street, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
