Jean D. Callahan, 81, of Pace, FL died peacefully at her home on February 26, 2013 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Callahan is survived by her husband of 60 years, John Lewis; her son, Danny of Pace; her sister, Dale (Doyle) Nevins of Milton; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend and caregiver, Kathy Hopkins and her sister Gail Bradley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Radcliff and Nellie Douglas; a sister, Geraldine Watson; and her son, Billy Dwight Callahan.
Mrs. Callahan was born in Pensacola and raised in Gull Point Community. She was a member of the Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School for many years in Pensacola, FL, Laurel, MS. and Prattville, AL. She graduated from Pensacola High School and then attended Florida School of Nursing in Chattahoochee, FL. She received her nursing degree from Charity Hospital in New Orleans. She worked for several years at the Medical Center Clinic and Baptist Hospital in Pensacola where she was the Nursery Supervisor.
Mrs. Callahan was published author of several poems and short stories. She was a member of the Alabama Conclave and Writers Association. Her family Christmas gifts were collections of her childhood memories known as "Jean's Stories".
She was loved by so many people and always had a smile on her face. She was known for her love of animals especially her dogs including her current best friend, "Wally".
The family would like to thank Comfort Care and Emerald Coast Hospice for their support and care.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 28th, 6-8 PM at Lewis Funeral Home in Pace. Services will be Friday, March 1st at 11 AM at Lewis Funeral Home in Pace with Minister Mike Mefford of the West Milton Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be Friday at 1 PM at Roberts Cemetery on Creighton Road in Pensacola.
