Jean Jacobi Obituary

Jean Barrineau Jacobi

1930-2013

Jean Barrineau Jacobi, 83, a resident of Azalea Trace Life Care Community, died Sunday, September 1, 2013.

Norma Jean Barrineau, born March 23, 1930, grew up in Barrineau Park, a farming community founded by her grandfather in Escambia County, FL. She graduated from Tate High School and then Florida State University. She began her teaching career in music education. After marrying Al Jacobi on Thanksgiving Day, 1951, and starting a family, she found her vocational ministry as a kindergarten teacher at Episcopal Day School and later taught in the Escambia County Public School System. She retired from Cordova Park Elementary School in 1996 after 37 years of teaching. She also served as school librarian at EDS and taught music at school, church, and in her home. She served in many different capacities through Gadsden Street United Methodist Church. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, and Escambia Retired Educators Association. She volunteered for many years with the West Florida Memory Disorders Clinic and Pensacola Habitat for Humanity where she established a children's library. She was a gracious hostess and found purpose and meaning as a loving caregiver for many of her extended family, neighbors, and friends.

Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Albert Avera Jacobi; father, W.C. "Teddy" Barrineau, Jr.; mother, Reba Powell Barrineau; and brother, William Merwyn Barrineau.

Survivors include daughter Donna Jacobi Pruett (Jack), sons Bill (Stacy), Neil (Kim), and Lee (Nancy); grandchildren Melanie, Al (Jamie), Tim (Anna), Ryan, Daniel (Mallory), Josh (Ashley), Sara (Paige), and Lindsey; five great-grandchildren; and seven cousins, including Bill MacKay with whom she enjoyed traveling and attending local concerts.

Services will be held Thursday, September 5, 2013, at 11am at Gadsden Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Bobby Ellisor and Rev. Steve Winton officiating. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel from 5:00 to 8:00pm on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, and at the church one hour prior to the worship service.

Active Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews John Jacobi, David Jacobi, and Jack Randall. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Jim Robinson Sunday School Class.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gadsden Street United Methodist Church, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity, or Alzheimer's Family Services.

Memories and Condolences
for Jean Jacobi

Not sure what to say?

Mrs. Jacobi was my kindergarten teacher. While enrolled in her class at Cordova park I was hospitalized for a month due to a serious bone infection. She came to see me while I was there. She told me stories and would have the class make crafts to put in my room. Twenty five years later I still remember that. I was told when we get to heaven all the people that made a difference in our lives are there welcome us, I can't wait to see her again.

Donna, Bill, Neal, and Lee I will always see your mothers smile in my memories. Her gentle ways, and infectious giggle. Many good times camping, swimming, and fishing at Barrineau Park bring a smile to my face. I know this time of loss is hard but there is a rejoicing in heaven right now to have such a great lady. She's probably playing the piano while her Al and my dad are singing along. God's comfort will come as you face the days ahead. Blessings to you all.

Jean was a lovely lady who I enjoyed teaching with at Cordova Park. We laughed and were delighted to learn that we were distant cousins on the Askew family tree and that she had visited my childhood home in Panama City!
Rest in Peace, Jean!

Dearest Donna, Jack and family, Frank and I will always hold your Mom in our hearts with memories of her love for and pride in all you are and do. Thank you for sharing your Momma with us.
Our love for you and all,

To all of the Jacobi family I want to send my love and prayers for you. I have such wonderful memories of my dearest friend ... and all of you as we spent so many wonderful hours camping and having such fun with Jean and Al ... now we can have the wonderful thoughts of their reunion. I loved Nancys description of the rejoicing that is in progress and remembering Jean's "giggle" is a treasure.

Dear Family, just seeing the beautiful picture of Aunt Jean made me smile and tear up at the same time. She truly was a beautiful person inside and out who cared about everyone more than herself. She was a wonderful aunt, and I feel blessed to have been part of her life. Uncle Al is happy now to have his bride back with him and I can hear her giggle like she did when she was in his company. She will be missed. Love to you all. Nancy Jacobi White
