Penelope Ann Wilkes
1942-2012
Penelope Ann Wilkes, of Gulf Breeze, passed away November 16, 2012, with her daughter and son by her side.
Penny was born December 30, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland to Richard and Frances Nickels. She graduated from Towson High in 1961 and went on to attend Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, the nursing college of Lafayette County Hospital in Oxford, Mississippi, and later graduated from the University of West Florida.
Her work took her from practical nursing to social work, spending more than 20 years with the Department of Children and Families. Penny actively volunteered wherever she saw a need, but her most important and rewarding job was that of mother and grandmother.
Penny was amazing woman with a quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, and generous heart. She loved to travel and recently fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting Alaska and China. She also enjoyed going to the movies and spending time with her grandchildren- taking them to the zoo, local festivals, or the park to feed the ducks. Most of all, she devoted her life to those she loved. She was a beautiful lady in every sense of the word.
Ms. Wilkes is survived by her daughter, Krista Wilkes McCallum: son, Christopher Wilkes: and grandchildren Donovan Wilkes and Kenzie McCallum. She also leaves behind many friends and loved ones.
A memorial service for Penelope will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, November 25, at Trahan Family Funeral Home.
