Walter Birks, Sr., age 92 passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with family and friends at his side April 24, 2014. Walter was born in a borough of North Braddock, Pennsylvania in the county of Allegheny and later moved to Pensacola, Florida.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, James Francis and Harriet Oliver Birks; wife, Erma G. Birks; and his son, Walter Birks, Jr.
He is survived by his twin daughters, Nancy Birks and Louise B. Mayberry and son-in-law, Leon J. Mayberry; sister-in-law, Hannah Birks; niece, Janie (Ed) Faile; nephew, Thomas O. Marks (Patty); two sons, Mark and Tim; and partner Chris Carlton; nephew, Jay Wolcott and wife Betty, all of Pensacola, FL; daughter-in-law, Sherrie Birks; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren all of Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Walter was a member of the Masonic Lodge #24 for 30 plus years and graduated from Pensacola High School Class of '39. He started his career as an aviation metal smith mechanic on May 13, 1946 where he held various positions; production control man AMS; leading man AMS to the PBM Metal Shop as supervisor, supervisory production control man and supervisor production planning division. He retired from Civil Service, June 30, 1974 with 32 years of service from NARF, NAS Pensacola. He received an honorable discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States of America from the United States Navy in August 1951. He was also a World War II veteran.
Walter enjoyed cast net fishing; woodworking and working in the yard. He was a life-long parishioner of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church and St. John's Episcopal Church of Warrington, where he was a member of the Vestry Board for quite a number of years. He will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather and loving great grandfather and truly be missed by all.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 07, 2014 from 6pm to 8pm at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel, 3351 Scenic Highway. Committal services will be held on Thursday, May 08, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Bayview Memorial Park, followed by Communion Service at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 3200 North 12th Avenue, at 12 noon with The Rev. Eric Long and The Rev. Jessica H. Babcock officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the Bible Class of St. Christopher's. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
The family would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for the compassionate care given to Walter by Dr. David P. Bernstein and Dr. Jamal Joudeh and staff at Woodlands Cancer Center of Pensacola. Thank you Marti Wells—RN; Angela Sewell, LPN; Catherine Harrison, LPN; Ardelia Catchings, LPN; and Danny Rainey, LPN; all of Covenant Hospice for all the special acts of kindness, loving care and devotion to Walter. And most of all, we want to thank the PAT team and all the St. Christopher's Church members and families for all the special thoughts, prayers, and support that was given to us with all the lovely visits to our home during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Christopher's Episcopal Memorial Fund, 3200 N. 12th Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32503, in his honor or to Covenant Hospice, Pensacola Branch, 5041 N. 12th Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32504 in Walter's name.
