Claud Howard Owens
January 9, 1931
September 13, 2013
Claud Howard Owens, age 82, of Pensacola, FL died at 12:00 noon, September 13, 2013 at the Joyce Goldenberg Hospice Inpatient Residence of Covenant Hospice after a struggle with several medical conditions, including Leukemia.
Howard was the only child of Katherine Williams Owens and Claude Howard Owens. Born on January 9, 1931, he claimed Evergreen, Alabama as his hometown, and lived there for much of his childhood and young adult life.
Howard graduated from Evergreen High School, and attended Troy University, Troy AL and the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL. He proudly served his country, and was a veteran of the United States Air Force
He moved to Pensacola in 1956, where he met the former Margaret Ann Knight, of Furman, AL, who later became his wife of 51 years until her death in September, 2000. He loved her and missed her greatly, and has now gone to join her.
Howard was a talented draftsman and design engineer, a skill he began to learn in the Air Force. He worked for several firms in the Pensacola area in that capacity. However, much of his career was spent as a manufacturer's representative, selling industrial supplies in the process chemical industry. He would proudly tell you that if there was a paper mill in the lower 48 states, he'd been in it. He loved to travel, and along with Ann, he saw much of this country by car. He was actively involved with his church-Christ Episcopal Church-as an usher, acolyte coordinator and in other volunteer capacities. He was also active as a coach in youth sports leagues, coaching many years in Bill Bond Baseball and various sports at the YMCA. And he loved the Crimson Tide.
He is survived by his son; Tom Owens and 3 grandchildren; Thomas, Kate and Elizabeth all of Pensacola, FL, and two cousins; John H. (Pete) Mosley (Sue Ellen) of Ozark, AL and Robert Mosley ( Sarah) of Greenville, NC and their children and grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Christ Episcopal Church in Pensacola, FL with The Rev. C. Neal Goldsborough officiating. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Owens Memorial fund at the Episcopal Day School of Christ Church in Pensacola. His daily visits to EDS, along with his grandchildren, Thomas, Kate and Elizabeth were the highlight and joy of his later years.
The family would like to offer its sincere gratitude to the staff and doctors of Gulf Breeze Hospital, Covenant Hospice and to Dr. Shailesh Patel and his staff, who all provided excellent and gentle care for Howard.
