Elizabeth "Betty" Winona Moore Gonzalez (age 91), died on September 9, 2013. Betty was born on February 11, 1922, in New Waterford, Ohio. In 1943, Betty joined the U.S. Navy
and was one of the original eight waves stationed in Pensacola during WWII
. She was the last surviving member of that first group of female Navy chiefs. Betty retired as a Federal civil servant from the Naval Medical Research Laboratory at NAS Pensacola.
She met her husband at Hopkins Boarding House in downtown Pensacola. She and Robert "Bobby" Conrad Gonzalez were married on April 2, 1953, in Pensacola. They were married for over 31 years when Bobby passed away in 1984.
Betty and Bobby were very active in the Disabled American Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks
, and Shriners organizations. She was a former president of the Warrington Elkettes and charter member of the Hadji Shrine's Daughters of the Nile.
She is survived by her sister, Ann Hoover of Columbiana, Ohio; her niece, Martha (David) Gonzalez of Pace, FL; nephews Bill (Cathy) Hoover, Tom Hoover, and beloved great niece Laurie Hoover (John) Heintzelman, all of Columbiana, Ohio. She is also survived by her long time neighbors and very close friends, Ray and Nell Ivy.
Special thanks to her caregivers Dot Brown, Elaine Sheldon, and Linda Shelly. Their extra efforts allowed Betty to stay in her home for a long period of time.
Visitation will be held from Sunday from 3:00-5:00 PM at Faith Chapel Funeral Home. Members of the Warrington Elkettes and the Daughters of the Nile will conduct separate services near the end of the Visitation.
Funeral services will begin at Faith Chapel Funeral Home at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 16, 2013. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Florida Elks Harry-Anna Trust Fund, P.O. Box 49, Umatilla, FL 32784.
