Ellie R. Gilbert


1932 - 2013

Ellie R. Gilbert began her life July 06, 1932 in Elmira Heights, New York as one of five children. She was preceded in death by her parents Julia and Charles Raupers, her sisters, Helena Jacobs and Catherine McCallum, and brother, Louis Raupers. She has one surviving sister, Rita Hughey of Elmira, NY. Ellie is survived by her children, Charlene Gilbert, Scott Gilbert and Julianna McCarger. She is grandmother to Brittany, Christopher and Michelle Gilbert and great grandmother, Colton and Kinsley of the Pensacola area. She is also grandmother to Allysa, Megan and Hunter of Corning, New York. She is also survived by her loyal and longtime friend, Ronald Shelton, who brightened her days with his smile, kindness and constant support.

She joined the U. S. Navy in 1952 and served during the Korean Conflict as a Flight Stewardess with VR-6 at McGuire Air Force Base in Trenton, New Jersey. After leaving the military in 1956, she worked as a federal employee in Norfolk, Virginia; Bermuda and BWI Naval Air Stations and Naval Regional Medical Center in Pensacola, FL. She retired after 35 years of federal service from the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., where she served as a National Equal Employment Manager. After retirement she returned to Pensacola and worked as a part-time EEO Investigator and provided volunteer services to the Guardian Ad-Litem Program.

She became a born-again Christian and was baptized in the New Testament Fellowship Church, Pensacola, Florida where she cherished the love of her church family. She will be remembered for her generous heart, vibrant personality, sense of humor and love for all human kind.

We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Homestead Village as well as Covenant Hospice for their compassion and kindness. We would also like to say thank you to Dr. Mark Boatwright for his twenty years plus care of Mom.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Oak Lawn Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., Wednesday.
