Elna Marie Hammond
Elna Marie Hammond, 92, of Evans, CO died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012 at Life Care Center of Greeley. She was born on Nov. 11, 1920 in Holden, MA to Enoch and Ruth (Bergstrand) Lindstrom.
Elna graduated from Holden High School and worked at Norton Co. in Worcester, MA. During World War II her best friend, Minna Crooker and Minna's soon-to-be husband, Donald Sweet, introduced Elna to one of Donald's shipmates, Dirvon D. Hammond of Bay Minette, AL. Both Donald and Dirvon were members of the US Coast Guard performing convoy duty between Boston and Iceland.
Elna and Dirvon were married on June 5, 1943 in Holden, MA. They lived in northwest Florida for most of their married life. She was a homemaker; he was an electrical technician at Eglin Air Force Base until his retirement.
Survivors include her son, John Hammond of Chapel Hill, NC; daughter, Elizabeth (Ken) Singleton of Evans, CO; grandson, Steve Hammond of Wilmington, NC and great granddaughter, Alexandria Hammond of Oxford, AL.
Elna was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers, Carl (Betty) and William Lindstrom; and her daughter-in-law, Mary Hammond.
There was cremation. A graveside service will be held in mid-April in Stockton, AL.
