HOWARD RONALD "BUCK" HICKS
1943 - 2012
Buck, as he was known to all family and friends, passed away on October 23, 2012, after a brief and valiant battle with cancer. He was born March 9, 1943, in Cedar Grove, WV, the son of Howard Julian and Ruby Garnett Hicks.
Buck proudly served in the US Army
from 1960-1964 and in the US Navy
from 1964 until 1981. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam war
s. He was awarded a Navy Commendation Medal for exemplary action, "saving numerous lives," as a flight deck supervisor aboard the USS Duluth during the refugee evacuation of South Vietnam in 1975.
After retiring from the military, Buck worked at Nelson Mechanical Contractors, Lear Seigler Industries, Spivey & Sons Plumbing and Pensacola International Airport. He was a life member of Amvets and a plank founder of Amvets Post 292.
Buck was preceded in death by: his parents: his brothers, Bobby Ray and William Michael Hicks; his best friend, Bill Bonifay, whose family "adopted" Buck; and a special niece, Heather.
He leaves to treasure his memory: his wife, Carol Hicks; his brother, Richard (Cathy) Hicks; his daughter, Renee (Buddy) Mehl; his son, Rob (Karen) Hicks; grandchildren, Michael, Chelsey, Amanda, Robert and Natalie; great-grandson, Matthew; numerous nieces and nephews; Joseph Bonifay and many friends.
Buck took great pleasure in entertaining family and friends at "Clum's Place" on Havburg Drive and in taking care of his "puppies, kittens, fillies, colts and 'ducks' (chickens)." He also thoroughly enjoyed road trips to the Blue Ridge Parkway and fellowship and camping trips with the Eagle Saddle Club.
Trahan Family Funeral Home, 419 Yoakum Court, is in charge of arrangements.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. and a memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the funeral home.
