James Douglas Grissett died May 18. He was born in Wilmington, N.C., and resided in Pensacola many years. James received a degree in engineering from the University of Florida
and a Ph.D. in physiology from the Medical College of Virginia. After serving in the U.S. Air Force he did research at the NASA facility in Hampton, Va.
He retired from the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory in 1994. His research there improved communication capacity of deployed submarines. He considered his most important work to be the computer models he created to improve pilot safety. James enjoyed spending time at his home in the North Carolina mountains where he pursued his love of camping and hiking.
James is survived by his wife Gwen, his brother Albert Grissett (Judy), his niece Karen Warner, his nephew Alan Grissett, his children Jennifer Gruber (Paul), Stephanie Manuel (Marlon) and Michael Grissett (Debbie) and his grandchildren Brittney Manuel, Allen Manuel, Rebekah Manuel, Julie Grissett, Katie Grissett and Maria Grissett.
