April 23, 2013
Dick was born in Hillsboro, IL to Florence and Kenneth Hill. He spent his formative years in Hillsboro and graduated high school in 1948.
His parents were transferred to Indianapolis, IN in 1948 and he followed them to attend the Purdue Extension in Indianapolis. After two years at the Extension, he transferred to the main Purdue University
campus in Lafayette, IN. After graduating from Purdue with a chemistry major he joined the U.S. Army
and was assigned to Artillery. He fought in the Korean War.
Following his years of service, he married Carole Sundling in 1955 and once again attended Purdue University to receive his M. S. and Ph. D. in 1960 with a degree in organic and inorganic chemistry.
He had interesting work in private industry including working at PR Mallory before he joined the Department of Agriculture at Beltsville, MD. His accomplishments at the USDA include appointments to several worldwide organizations such as: WHO/FAO, IUPAC and JMPR and making Who's Who of the United States and American Men and Women of Science. He traveled extensively to underdeveloped countries to help them increase food production and to train them on the safe use of insecticides and pesticides. He developed analytical testing methods for determining pesticide residue levels in foods to ensure public safety. These methods had to work in a variety of laboratories around the world, many with limited equipment and budgets.
After retirement, he moved to Pensacola, FL in 1993. His retirement years were spent volunteering his time and computers on community scientific projects such as SETI and BOINC. At one time he had nine computers working on various investigative programs. He liked to sit in the sun and fish from his boat. He was an avid astronomer and enjoyed scanning the sky with his telescope. He loved all things related to science and he was a strong patriot and supported the armed services.
Dick will be deeply missed by: his wife of 57 years; his daughter, Christy Jane Draper of Pensacola, FL; son, Carter Richard Hill (Ora Koeder) of Portland, OR; and two granddaughters, Cassidy Jane Hill and Violet Ora Phoenix Koeder Hill of Portland, OR.
