Lonnie Val Cathey

Lonnie Val Cathey passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 21, surrounded by his family. Val was born in Memphis, but was raised in Blountstown and Mexico Beach, FL.

After graduating from the University of Florida in 1960 with a pharmacy degree, he moved to Pensacola where he owned Vals University Drugs in the early years. He retired in April 2012 from CVS Pharmacy. Val was an avid Florida Gator and was passionate about Florida Football.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Estell and W.O. Cathey; brother, William O. "Bubba" Cathey; sister, Frances "Inky" Parker; first wife, Lalla Bailey Cathey; second wife, Audray Burch Cathey; and daughter, Tawny Burch.

Val is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lorraine; children, John Kirk Cathey (Marcey), Cythia Ann "Candy" Sweeney (Clayton), Pamela Barrett Barnes (Rick), Trenia Burch Burkett (James), Bruce Burch (Paula), Jim Sponheim, Arlene Wires (Ronnie), and Andy Cathey.

He was known as Val, but his favorite names were ones given to him by his 21 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, "Granddaddy", "Grandpa", and "Darlin". His grandchildren are Chrystal, Elizabeth and Travis Cathey, Clayton Sweeney, Raif and Barrett Barnes, BJ, Brett and Emily Burkett, Laurie, Audrey and Bryce Burch, Ashley and Heather Sponheim, Samantha and Timothy Wright, Brian, Autumn and Allison McKinney, Ayden Wires and Madison Cathey; great grandchildren, Blaine, Chandler, Chloe and Anthony; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Trahan Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Val would want us to celebrate and remember the good times with laughter and stories and know that he is in a far better place, that the golf ball will travel further, the Gators will always win and that his family will find peace. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life service on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. at Gonzalez Methodist Church.
