Mary Ellen Huggins


1928 - 2013

Mary Ellen Huggins was born June 3, 1928 in Ozark, Alabama and passed away peacefully on July 6, 2013 in Plano, Texas after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Mary lived in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze, Florida for 58 years. For 30 years, as a hairdresser, Mary owned and operated the Carousel Beauty Salon in Warrington. She loved bible study and attended the United Methodist Church in Gulf Breeze where she was active in the Senior Ministry. She enjoyed gardening, sharing many plantings and seeds from her garden. She was also a master seamstress.

She is survived by her daughter, Nicki Huggins and son-in-law, Scott Sternberg, of Topango, California. Mary is also survived by her son, John Gary Huggins of Carrollton, Texas. She was very proud of her grandchildren: Noah Freeman, living in San Francisco, California; Taylor Sternberg in New York City, New York; Elizabeth Huggins in Irving, Texas; and John Alexander Huggins in Austin, Texas.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Shelly and Era Matthews, and her husband, John Maurice Huggins, a noted sportsfisherman who helped develop Pensacola into a sportfishing destination before his death in 1967.

Other surviving relatives include her sister, Alice Maxine Brown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Services and Internment will be held at Bayview Memorial, Pensacola, Florida, on Saturday, July 13 at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m.

The family wishes to thank the care given to Mary at Sunrise Senior Living Center in Frisco, Texas, as well as Prestonwood Skilled Nursing Facility in Plano, Texas. We will never forget the special gift of your care every day.

Memories of Mary will remain with us forever, and her smile always cherished.
