Nadine Gabel Kastanakis died at Gulf Breeze Hospital on Monday, June 2, 2014 following a fall and a short illness. Her husband Harry and her children were by her side.
Nadine was born on February 14, 1927 in Fairhope, AL to John and Katherine Gabel. Nadine leaves behind her beloved husband of 65 years, Harry Kastanakis, Jr, of Gulf Breeze; her son, Harry Kastanakis III (Tre') of Navarre; her daughter and son-in-law, Renee Kastanakis and Rick Bent of Atlanta; her grandchildren, John and Emily Bent; nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, John Everett Gabel.
Nadine spent most of her life in Pensacola. She graduated from Pensacola High School in 1945. She attended Florida State University one year, before she returned to Pensacola to work at 1st Bank & Trust. After she married Harry on June 11, 1949, they lived in Gainesville while Harry finished school. They returned to Pensacola and Nadine returned to the bank until she had children.
Nadine was active in her church throughout her life. She was raised at Christ Church in downtown Pensacola, where she and Harry were married. She and Harry were founders and raised their children at St. Christophers Episcopal Church. After retiring with Harry to Gulf Breeze in 1991, they regularly attended and were active at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church.
Nadine found God's presence especially in her gardens and flowers, and participated in the flower ministry at St. Francis as long as she was able. She spent over 20 year participating in the St. Francis Women's Bible Study Group. She loved crafting and antiquing with good friends for many years. Her family and particularly her grandchildren brought her great joy throughout her life. Spending time with them always gave her great pleasure, and she will be deeply missed.
Visitation will take place at St. Francis of Assisi, 1 St. Francis Drive, Gulf Breeze beginning at 1 pm on Thursday, June 5. Services will begin at St. Francis at 2 pm on Thursday, followed by a reception at the church. A private family burial will follow. Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
