Vincent Sarra Obituary

Vincent dePaul Sarra

1933 - 2012

On Saturday August 18, 2012, Vincent dePaul Sarra, 79 passed away peacefully in his home town of Gulf Breeze, FL with his wife, children and grand children by his side.

Vincent was born to Minnie Hauer and Steen Sarra on June 16, 1933 at Sacred Heart Hospital. He was educated at St. Michael's Parochial School, Catholic High School and Spring Hill College. He was an inspiration to all and was known for his integrity, his character and his extraordinary sense of humor.

His lifelong hobby was playing music. He played Bluegrass music with the White Sands Panhandle Band for 20 years. They played popular venues across the nation, but his favorite stages were the Sunray Taco Shop and Paddy O'Leary's Irish Pub.

He was a member and past president of the Pensacola Civitan Club and the Exchange Club. Vincent was also a member of the Knights of Columbus where he achieved a fourth degree status.

Everyone close to Vincent knew he was an avid sports fan. In 1978 he served as the GBSA commissioner of girls softball and he served as a coach for his children's team sports. If Vincent wasn't telling jokes he was bragging about all of his grandchildren's athletic ability.

He was a member of the St Ann's Catholic Church for the past 46 years and previously served on the church Parish Council.

He is survived by his wife Billie Jean Burke Sarra, and his children: Michael Q. Sarra and wife Tina, Susan A. Sarra Knapp and husband Craig, Sandra A. Sarra and Kim Vallia, Stacey A. Sarra, J. Paul Sarra and his wife Michelle; ten grandchildren Elizabeth, Kristen, Kyle, Kevyn, Christopher, Kaylen, Haleigh, Nikki, Xan, and Stella; one great grandchild Josie, and his brother Michael H. Sarra.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze, FL Wednesday, August 22 at 11:00 am followed by a reception at the church hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor may be made to the American Heart Association, 4400 Bayou Blvd., Pensacola, FL 32504 and the American Cancer Society 5401 Corporate Woods Drive, Pensacola, FL 32504.

Vince Sarra and I met when we both went to work for the
Pensacola U.S. Post Office in 1957, we later fished, played
ball and visited at my house on several occasions to hear
his jokes and listen to him play his guitar and sing, he was a great friend and an entertainer. I have one of his
C D's that he gave me with music of the Pan Handle Band. I will never forget the times he and I spent together. God bless him and his family.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Serra family.
We resided in Pensacola area for 10 yrs, and left 2004.
Now we are back....LOVING this are more than San Antonio and South Texas.
We now have a home in the Gulf Shores area...although our hearts lie with Pensacola/Pensacola Beach.

Before moving here we came to visit my sister and she resided on the island at the time.
Our first place she took us for dinner was the Sun Ray Taco Shop on the beach it was te first beach bar/restaurant we went to.
Then it moved to the boardwalk...and we went there.

We will always cherish the memories and wanted to let the family know how much we loved the Sun Ray.

My sincerest expression of sympathy goes
out to B.J. and all members of the Sarra
family. Vince was a good friend of mine, he and I started working at the
downtown Post Office on the same Day,
September 13, 1957, Vince came to my
home played his guitar and could tell
one joke after another. In later years
I did not have the opportunity to spend
more time with Vince and B.J. as I had
gone into Federal Law Enforcement and
moved around the country. May my friend
Vince rest in peace, he will be missed
by many.

This is Mary from Paddy O' Learys,it was such a pleasure to wait on the Sarra family after the mass at the pub and it truly was a celebration of life. I just wanted to say I felt the love in that room with all the family ..and I'm glad I got to work the wake at Paddy's and be a part of that.Wow how one person can leave such a wonderful legacy ,we all can only hope to have that many people show the outpouring of love at our own demise.Glad I got to work yesterday and be a part of the Sarra family memorial celebration.
