Ada Marjorie Schlafer Obituary
Ada Marjorie Schlafer

Ada Marjorie Schlafer, age 93, passed away on Thursday, November 15, 2012, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.Preceding her in death was her husband, John B. Schlafer; her parents, Sidney and Ada Mae Roberts; her brother, Sidney Louis Roberts, and three sisters, Catherine Jones, Norma Jones, and Amenia Phillips.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Schlafer Bell and her husband, Robert, of Fort Walton Beach; her son, John Timothy Schlafer of Pensacola; her granddaughter Meredith Bell Smith, her husband Patrick, and her great-granddaughter, Caroline Bell Smith of Augusta, Georgia. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Staples, of Pleasant Grove, in Pensacola.

Margie grew up in the community of Pleasant Grove where she was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She graduated from Pensacola High School in 1937, and a year later fell in love with a handsome sailor, who became the love of her life for nearly 69 years. They married in her parents' home, and then traveled the world together.

After retirement they returned to Pleasant Grove with their two children, building their home next to her parents. There she devoted her life to her husband, family, church and community. With a fiercely competitive spirit, she worked hard to be the best at anything she attempted; especially making the most wonderful pound cakes which Johnny delighted in giving away. Her home was the gathering place for the Roberts clan for many happy Christmas celebrations, and those times were always full of laughter, joy, and treasured memories of a family connected.

Long after her memory of people and places slowly faded away, she continued to quote scripture verses and sing her favorite hymns. The Bibles she had were worn, showing signs of daily use, as were her prayer journals. She loved the Lord and served Him faithfully. Always willing to help others, to forgive and love, she lived a life pleasing to Christ, a life that is a model to others and legacy to her family and friends.

The family extends their gratitude to Dr. Sara Rushing, the staff of Belvedere Commons, and to Covenant Hospice, particularly Evelyn, all of whom lovingly cared for "Miss Ada" during her final days.

Visitation will be held at FAITH CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME SOUTH 100 Beverly Parkway in Pensacola, on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 19, 2012 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with interment immediately following at the church cemetery where she will be buried next to her beloved Johnny, just as she requested many, many times. Flowers are welcomed and donations in her memory may be made to the "Together We Build" program at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church or to Covenant Hospice. Condolences may be placed online @fcfhs.com.
