Lt. Alfred Eugene DeVita, USN (Ret.), age 91, passed away on Sunday, September 23rd, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Cambridge, MA, the son of Italian immigrants Frank and Emily DeVita. He proudly served in the Unites States Navy for 30 years (1940-1970), having served in WWII aboard the USS Princeton (CVL-23) which was sunk on October 24, 1944 in the Battle of the Leyte Gulf and aboard the USS Independence (CVA-62) during the Vietnam War. Alfred was awarded the American Defense medal, The American Theater medal, Asiatic-Pacific theater medal with ten stars, World War II Victory medal, Philippine Liberation medal with one star, Armed Forces Units Commendation and Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Jessie Raye DeVita and two sons, Frank and Tony DeVita.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandy DeVita; son Felix DeVita; daughter-in-law Michele DeVita and grandson Antony DeVita; as well as a brother, Frank DeVita (Ann).
Graveside services will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Barrancas National Cemetery with Deacon Eugene Pallone officiating and full military honors rendered by the Navy.
Alfred will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
