1925 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Cary Ward Sr. Obituary
Master Chief Cary Carlson Ward, Sr., USN (ret.)

Cary Carlson Ward Sr., 87, of Pensacola, Florida, passed peacefully into God's keeping on March 7, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.

Cary was born March 23, 1925, in Pensacola, FL, the son of the late James Oscar Elijah Ward and Carrie Otis Majors, the fourth generation of his family born in Escambia County. His childhood was spent in the downtown area around Seville Square where his father worked at the old Gulf Ice Plant. Cary was in the Pensacola High School Class of 1943 but left school to answer his country's call to arms by enlisting in the US Navy on his 17th birthday during World War II. During the war he was a hospital corpsman assigned to an artillery unit with the 3rd Marine Division during the invasion of Bougainville and was one of the first one hundred men to hit the beach with the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade on Guam. In 1944 he was rotated back to the United States where he married his beloved Mildred Louise Davis (from Atmore, AL) in Pensacola on November 23, 1944. Cary's military career spanned this nation's conflict during the Korean conflict and again during the Vietnam War. Sent to Vietnam in December 1968, he served again with the 3rd Marine Division in Phu Bai and Danang. Tragically, he and Mildred lost their oldest son US Army SSGT. Cary C. Jr., US Special Forces, in Germany on November 30, 1967, just prior to Chief Ward's deployment to Vietnam. Cary would retire as a Master Chief Hospital Corpsman, E-9, from the Navy in 1977 after 35 years of faithful service to his country and returned to his hometown of Pensacola where he enrolled in Pensacola Junior College and University of West Florida and obtained his respective degrees in Psychology. Cary attended the Milestone Baptist Church in Pensacola.

He is preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, Mildred (January 20, 2013); brother, US Colonel James Woodrow Ward; sister, Merline Eula Ward Booher and his son, SSGT Cary Carlson Ward Jr.

He is survived by his son, Daniel Marcus (Debbie); grandchildren, Zachary Ward (Melissa) and Angela Bell (Glynn) and four great granddaughters.

Cary was very devoted to and dearly loved by his entire family who will miss him greatly! He never hesitated to provide a helping hand to his family or neighbors when needed and his presence and sage advice will be sorely missed.

Visitation will be held 5-7pm Monday, March 11, 2013 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel.

Funeral Service will be held 10:15am Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at All Faiths Chapel, NAS Pensacola with Rev. Jim Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors.
