1916 - 2012
Joseph Castellani died on December 27, 2012. He was born in Carpignano Sesia, Piemonte, Italy, and emigrated to Syracuse, New York at the age of 5 with his parents and brother. He married Irene Riboldazzi, a fellow Piemontese, in 1941.
In World War II, he was a member of the Army's First Division Signal Core, The Big Red One, and survivor of the D-Day Omaha Beach invasion.
Upon his return from the war, he attended Syracuse University.
The family lived in the suburbs of Syracuse, New York, throughout the school year and spent its summers in The Adirondack Mountains where they owned and ran Eagle Point Cottages.
In 1978, he retired from the Solvay School System and moved to Pensacola, Florida.
In Pensacola, he and his wife were active in tennis, square dancing, traveling and Elderhostel. He volunteered at Baptist Hospital and was a participant, together with his wife, Irene, in many cultural, social and academic organizations and activities associated with PJC and The University of West Florida including several organized trips to Italy. He and his wife were communicants of Our Savior (St. Paul's).
His dear wife of sixty-two years, Irene R. Castellani, and his beloved daughter, Christine Anne Steudler, preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Paul J. (Donna) Castellani, Mary Lee Martelli (Craig Butcher), Kenneth Steudler, John J. (Therese) Castellani, Ann C.(Gary) Gilpin, Mark J. (Kerry) Castellani, Stephen J. (Jane) Castellani, and Matthew J.(Kathy) Castellani. He is also survived by his sister, Emma Wright, of Liverpool, New York, many nieces and nephews and dear friend, Betty Wilkinson.
His many and cherished grandchildren, Catherine, David, Timothy, Eleanore, Andrew, William, Kate, Erik, Christian, Adam, Grant, Gavin, Genevieve, Christopher, Isabella, Allon, D.J., Anny, Stefan, Dallas, Libby, Miriah, Lilianna, Pamela, Melissa and Stefani and 17 great-grandchildren will forever miss his kindness and wit.
The family would like to express its gratitude to the staff of Carpenter's Creek and Emerald Coast Hospice.
A private burial was held at 11:00 a.m. at Barrancas Cemetery on Monday, December 31st. Father John Licari officiated.
A memorial mass will be held 10:00 AM Saturday January 12, 2013 at St. Annes Catholic Church, 5200 Saufley Field Road, Pensacola, Florida, with Father John Licari officiating.
