Merleas A. Coons
Merlease Coons life of selfless service ended early in the morning January 1, 2014. In Pensacola. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Spencer Coons and is survived by her son, Robert Glenn Garvin of Altamonte Springs, FL and her granddaughter, Dunrey Ann Garvin LaRose of Orlando, Fl.
Merlease was kind, considerate, loving, forgiving, generous and gracious toward everyone. She was also strong, fiercely independent, tenacious, politely assertive, an active advocate for fairness and always a lady.
She was a career educator in the fullest meaning of the word. She taught life skills before it was ever a phrase. At Pensacola Technical High School and later George Stone she taught typing, accounting and administrative skills. At Warrington Baptist Church she taught Sunday School for many years and also assisted the church in the office with bookkeeping and organizational tasks. She taught many young cooks as an invited contributor to over a dozen cook books. She cooked for the church and community events regularly; her cakes and pies were regionally famous and she made the best chicken and dumplings ever.
A leader in her Pensacola High School class of 1939 she became a true trailblazer for women, teaching leadership skills by example. Merlease was active in the League of Women Voters, and the National Education Association. She also served as President of the Escambia County Teachers Association and the Escambia Freedom Foundation several times each.
At their 2011 Founders Day Celebration the Pensacola Pilot Club honored Merlease as Member Emeritus. They recognized her multiple terms as local club President, her role as Lt. Governor of the North West Florida Region and her achievements as Governor of the Florida District.
Merlease was an inspiration for many over the years. She will be remembered with love, affection and appreciation, and will be deeply missed.
