Myrtle Sue Reynolds Norris

August 4, 1911

December 16, 2012

Myrtle Norris passed away on Sunday, December 16, at the age of 101. She was born to Stephen Parker Reynolds and Hattie McKinley Reynolds on August 4, 1911, in Franklin, Alabama. At the age of six, she and her family moved to the farming community of Booneville, Alabama, about twenty-five miles northwest of Atmore, Alabama. Her family of two sisters and four brothers lived on a small farm. Myrtle attended McCullough School, and later attended junior college in Brewton, Alabama and Pensacola Junior College.

In 1935 she married Oliver C. Norris, Sr., who worked for the Pensacola Naval Air Station through the war years as supervisor of landing field construction and maintenance. He later had a retail store in Brownsville and was a real estate broker. Myrtle taught kindergarten for many years at Brent Baptist Church School and at Ensley First Baptist Church Kindergarten. After Oliver died in 1979, Myrtle began a new career as caregiver for "little old ladies" (many of whom were younger than she!). She retired at age 90.

Myrtle is survived by her children: Clifford Norris (Ida), of Live Oak, Florida; Carol Burkman (Bob), of Miamisburg, Ohio; Jerry Norris (Diane), of Pensacola, Florida; Don Norris (Melody) of Cantonment, Florida; and Janet Kuykendall (John) of Lake City, Florida. Also, she is survived by her sister, Dot Drew, of McCullough, Alabama, her sister-in-law Gloria Tatum, her brothers-in-law Garland "Buddy" Norris and Glenn Norris, as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Myrtle's greatest wish was to live out her days in her own "special home" on Homewood Road. She was able to live there past her 98th birthday. She was proud to be a long-time member of Ensley First Baptist Church, and the Ruth Sunday School Class. Her fondest activity was the monthly gatherings at her house with a special group of ladies called the "Angels." Myrtle was the "Head Angel." While living at Bayside Manor, she enjoyed a special relationship with members of First Baptist Church of Pensacola.

Visitation will be at Faith Chapel North, 1000 South Highway 29, Cantonment, FL, from 10:00 till 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 19th, with the funeral service following at 11:00 am. Dr. Barry Howard, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Pensacola, will officiate. The family will have a graveside service that afternoon at 2:00 pm at the McCullough Cemetery, McCullough, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Ensley First Baptist Church, 50 West Johnson Avenue, Pensacola, FL, 32534, or First Baptist Church of Pensacola, 500 North Palafox Street, Pensacola, FL, 32501.
