Dr. Thomas Carroll

Dr. Thomas Carroll Committe, 89, a resident of Pensacola, FL since 1967 passed away on Monday, July 16, 2012.

Dr. Committe was born on August 3, 1922 in the city of Wheeling, WV. He received his undergraduate degree from Bethany College, a Masters degree from Texas Christian University and a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama. He was a Certified Public Accountant and earned a law degree from West Virginia University. He served in the United States Navy during the Second World War and was stationed in the South Pacific. During the early part of his career, he worked as an attorney and city councilman in Wheeling, WV and in 1958 ran for the U.S. Congress losing by less than 2,000 votes. In 1967, he was one of the founding faculty members and the first Chairman of the Accounting Department at the University of West Florida. It was in this position that Dr. Committe performed his greatest work. Utilizing a combination of common sense and an emphasis on practical problem solving, he created a curriculum that produced thirty years of graduates that have become productive members of their communities. If he were to be remembered for any single accomplishment in his life, he would want that memory to be of the many lives he touched during his work at the University of West Florida who will no doubt still recall his famous line "the biggest problem is knowing what the problem is".

He was preceded in death by his son, Frank Louis Committe.

Dr. Committe is survived by his wife; Rosemary Faulds Committe; 3 sons, Thomas Carroll, Jr., Bruce Edward and Louis Frazier; grandchildren, Thomas Carroll, III, Jason Ryan and Justin Carroll; great grandchild, Madeline Stein.

A Private Service will be held at Halycon Hills Memorial Park in Sherrard, WV on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at 1:00 P.M.
