William E. Rockwell
William E. Rockwell, 92, of Pensacola died Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at his home.
Mr. Rockwell was a native of South Charleston, WV. In 1955-56 he made a career change which brought the family, wife Lillian and sons Marty and Roger, to Pensacola and later to Milton, FL. From 1955 until his retirement as a supervisor in 1985 he worked at Escambia Chemical Corp., later Air Products.
In Pensacola he was a charter member of the Scenic Hills Country Club and a charter member and officer of the Pensacola Beach Elks Lodge.
From 1977 he was an active member of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Milton, where he was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church on April 22, 1984, and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 7027 and a Special Minister of the Eucharist.
In 1989 Mr. and Mrs. Rockwell moved back to Pensacola and became active with St. Paul Parish and Our Savior Church. Mrs. Rockwell died in 1993.
Mr. Rockwell enjoyed reminiscing about his early days in WV. He had an eager family audience who enjoyed tales of his daring youthful exploits and his South Charleston High School years. He served as senior class president and captain of the football team. Always resourceful and forward thinking, he recounted his efforts to make extra money: a teenage paper route, joining the National Guard while still in high school, and working at Union Carbide, yet still finding time to purchase land and build homes after he and Mary Lillian Murray married in 1940. He was an officer of the South Charleston and the West Virginia Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Though working in a wartime industry, Mr. Rockwell chose to join the Navy during World War II. One of his proudest moments came years later when he participated in the last Emerald Coast World War II Veterans Honor Flight to Washington DC in 2011.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Martin and Anne Rockwell of Louisville, KY and Roger and Mary Jo Hebert Rockwell of Pensacola; four grandchildren, Lauren McClure (Scott) and Markham Rockwell (Heather) of Louisville, KY; Patricia Lee, Pensacola, and Bill Rockwell (Kris) of Panama City; and nine great-grandchildren, Ian, Reed and Luke McKinley, Billy and Kaitlynn Lee, Sloane and Holden Rockwell and Bryce and Colby Rockwell.
