Howard Albert Martin, Jr., died October 31, 2013. He was born in New Orleans, LA, on February 6, 1937, to Howard A. Martin, Sr. and Arlene Vellette Zink. The family moved to Baton Rouge, LA, in 1938 and then to Mobile, Al, in 1947. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1956 and Auburn University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Industrial Management degree. He worked for the Social Security Administration from 1962 to 1987 before becoming a beach bum. He spent many happy hours at City Hall Beachside under Mayor Bob Merriman's administration, thoroughly enjoying his position as Chief Navel Inspector.
His other enthusiasm was his love of blues and jazz. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of blues music and musicians, and always had music playing wherever he was. He was happiest on the annual Legendary Rythm and Blues Cruises listening to live bands while basking in the sunshine with his blues cruise buddies. He also enjoyed belonging to the Jazz Society of Pensacola and particularly loved listening to Holly Shelton sing.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 50 years, Myrna Rose (Bond), children Cathy Taff and Jody Martin of Pensacola, grandchildren Kyle and Melanie Rose Donovan of Bourbon, MO, his brother Louis N. (Carrie) Martin, and nephew Louis A. (Amye) Martin of Covington, LA. He also leaves a cousin, Fay Kizzire, and her daughter Kathleen (Richard) Hickey of Denver, CO., his mentor Mayor Bob, and his many loved beach friends and staff at his favorite restaurants.
There will be no funeral. Mr. Martin gave his body to the University of Florida Medical School, and at the appropriate time his ashes will be scattered over the Gulf. His last wish is that everyone stop smoking.
