Vanessa Lynelle Long Nickerson

1957-2014

Vanessa Lynelle Long Nickerson, 56, died unexpectedly at home, Sunday, April 13, 2014.

Vanessa was loved and praised by relatives and friends alike. She ultimately passed as a result of being stubborn, refusing to follow doctors' (or anyone else for that matter) orders and not taking her high-blood pressure medicine. She graced us for more than a little over 5 decades but she would have said, "29 years and holding". She lived life on her own terms with the grace of God by her side. She was beautiful, unique, kind, and often referred to as Pocahontas by her students and co-workers. A loving spirit that spent 29 years in the Escambia County School System teaching children/young adults how to be strong, independent, to walk and possess other basic skills that some people take for granted daily. She loved God, her family/friends, her students, music, nature, animals, and helping others. Sears, Lowes, and Walmart lost their most valued customer, so if their stocks go down her passing might be the cause. She was the ultimate mother, friend, and teacher and was selfless until her last breath. You will never find another like her; she broke the mold when she was born.

Vanessa is survived by her two loving daughters, Tamala Nickerson and Tisha Nickerson, who possess a lot of the same wonderful qualities so her spirit will forever live on. Also survived by one grandson, Nathan Walker; one sister, Suzanne Wade; one brother, Darrel Long; two nephews, Logan Wade and Jacob Wade. She leaves behind many dear friends and co-workers. She was especially blessed to have Bashayer Binhassan, Jennifer Krumbein, Jeannie Wilson, Anna Crumbley, Carrie and Kimberly Kemp as close friends.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee to Preston Long, a navy dad, and Kathryn Rochelle Long, who brought her to Pensacola, Florida. She worked for the Escambia County School Board and with special needs children for 29 years.

A celebration of life will be at the Sanders Beach Community Center, Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 5:00 p.m.
