Doris M. Vasil passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014.
Doris recently celebrated her 94th birthday. She was the youngest of the eight children of Charles Wesley Estes and Mary Annis Smith Estes. All preceding her in death. Doris was born in Villa Grove, Illinois, but moved to Gary, Indiana as a small child.
She met her future husband, Raymond Paul Vasil, in grade school. They married soon after high school graduation, and remained together 50 years before his death in 1989. Mom mostly stayed home to care for her three daughters. But did work as a "Rosie the Riveter" in the Gary Indiana Steel Mills during World War LI while her husband served in the Navy.
As her daughters reached college age, Doris worked several jobs. As a telephone operator for five years she then attended beauty school, and had her own beauty parlor.
After her husband's death, Doris moved to Pensacola to be near her oldest daughter, Irene Vasil Hodge.
She was a faithful attendee at Gadsden Street Methodist Church until shortly before her passing.
She is survived by her three daughters, Irene Vasil Hodge (Warren), Donna Vasil Akin (Gerald) and Debora Vasil Hayes (Scott). Doris has five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The family is grateful to Pacifica Creekside, her final home, and to the staff of Covenent Hospice for their loving care in her final hours.
Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Merrillville, Indiana.
