Jan Agnes

Kawerk Kleinman

1925-2014

Jan Agnes Kawerk Kleinman, a beautiful and intelligent woman with an angelic radiance, died on Sunday, May 25, 2014. Her beloved husband and soul mate, Robert M. Kleinman, preceded her in death in 2011.

Jan lived with a joyful exuberance that was contagious for anyone who was fortunate enough to be in her life. She was born on August 3, 1925 to Roche Kawerk and Lucille Osment Kawerk in Birmingham, AL, as the eldest of two daughters. After graduating from Catholic High School in Cullman, AL, she moved to New York City for a modeling career. There she met her first husband and moved to Europe as a young Naval officer's wife.

Jan relocated to Pensacola, FL and returned to work to support and raise her five young children. While enrolled at Pensacola Junior College, she met the love of her life, Robert, who was a tenured professor at the time. Jan and Robert formed a strong family and would remain married for the rest of their lives, spanning 44 years. They traveled extensively, visited England, virtually all of the United States and lived in India for a year. Jan was Robert's right hand and Robert was her navigational compass. Together they were a graceful and formidable team. She worked endlessly drafting and editing his many publications and books. She and Robert were avid seekers, engaged in the world's profoundest and most affirmative philosophies and were truly in pursuit of beauty. They were alive to what is best in the world. Their love, laughter and thought-provoking discussions will resound in our memories forever.

Jan was an accomplished equestrian, a gourmet cook and a world-class hostess. Completing her Masters in Art History, she was passionate about learning and possessed a deep appreciation for art. She travelled extensively, gaining insight into world culture which she transferred to her cherished children and grandchildren. Her fabulous gourmet meals were another way of sharing and teaching them about those experiences. She deeply loved her children and grandchildren. Her profound kindness, unconditional love and willing encouragement will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her husband, Robert, Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Roche and Lucille Kawerk; her sister, Marilou Kawerk; her children, Sean Stiles and Veronica Stiles.

She is survived by her daughters, Christina Stiles, Sandra Collins and Donna Stiles; her sons, Charles G. Stiles III, Bruce Kleinman, Philip Kleinman and Jeffrey Kleinman; her grandchildren, Marla Walker, Ashley Jackson and Nicholas Smith and three great-grandsons.

A Memorial service will be led by Rand Hicks on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Integral Knowledge Study Center, located at 221 Clematis St., Pensacola, FL 32503.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Society, Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001 or online at www.alzfdn.org.
