James Melvin "Mel" Sykes
James Melvin "Mel" Sykes, age 59, died on May 26, 2014 at Sacred Heart Hospital after being struck by an automobile on Davis Highway in Pensacola, Florida. Born February 17, 1955, Melvin was born in, and a lifelong resident, of Pensacola. He is the oldest son of James Aubrey Sykes and Ruby Lee Thomas Sykes. Melvin had an older sister, Betty Lou York Yates, a younger brother, Jerry Aubrey Sykes, and a younger sister, Ruby Elaine Sykes.
Melvin attended Ferry Pass Elementary, Ferry Pass Junior High, and Woodham High Schools. His career consisted mainly of landscaping and recycling ventures. Melvin had a strong sense of fair play, enjoyed music from the mid-1960's to mid-1970's, was liked by all who knew him, and could always bring a smile to anyone's face with his remarkable sense of humor. Melvin was a loyal son and brother to his family and will be dearly missed.
Melvin is survived by his mother Ruby of Atlanta, GA, brother Jerry of Jacksonville, FL, sister Elaine of Pensacola, nephews Jamie Lee Sykes and Jacob Lou Sykes, both of Jacksonville, FL; Michael Wayne Pauley of Richmond, MO, Roger Dennis Yates of Tallahassee, FL, David McKinnon Yates of Pensacola, nieces Jennifer Lin Sykes of Jacksonville, FL, Aimee Darlene Mitchell of Hanceville, AL, and Deborah Darlene Yates of Pensacola. Melvin is predeceased by his father James and sister Betty.
Melvin will be laid to rest and returned to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday June 11, 2014 at Bayview Memorial Park on Scenic Highway in Pensacola. Family- Funeral & Cremation on Plantation Road in Pensacola is in charge of his burial arrangements.
