I.g. Hughes Sr. Obituary
I.G. Hughes, Sr.

1915 - 2014

I.G. Hughes, Sr., 98, of Pensacola, died June 14, 2014. He was born on December 27, 1915 in Becker, MS to Richard Oscar Hughes and Lillian Hazel.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Louise; and daughter, Linda Louise Jernigan. He is survived by loving wife of 19 years, Laura Katherine Ross Hughes; sons, I.G. Hughes, Jr. (Linda), Michael Allen Hughes (Lynda Jane); son-in-law, Larry Jernigan, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

During his lifetime, I.G. did many things to make a living and provide stability for his family. He plowed in a cotton field from sunup to sundown, sold candy through several counties out of the back of his car, drove caterpillars over new road construction in Mississippi, and worked in a TN grocery store. He was a crew chief on a B-25 during WWII, obtained a pilot's license, drove stock cars, built two houses from the ground up (including making his own concrete blocks on the weekends), became an aircraft inspector at NAS, owned his own Gulf service station, and was a Ford tractor salesman. At the age of 77, he shot a 77 in a game of golf. He raised three children while working additional part-time jobs, which was quite an accomplishment, though he was a humble man. In his later years with Laura, I.G. traveled the western part of the country, enjoying the beautiful landscape and companionship of family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

The funeral service, officiated by his son, Pastor I.G. Hughes, Jr., will be held at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 11am, with visitation one hour prior. Private burial will take place at Bayview Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Covenant Hospice 2001 N. Palafox Street Pensacola, FL 32501 or by visiting www.covenanthospice.org. Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
